James Fosdike's 'Deadly' , Indigenous comics talk, Jo Waite update - August 09 episode in archive.

In this post Swine Flu edition of TheComicSpot hosts John Retallick and Jo Waite interview cartoonist James Fosdike.

James speaks on the success of his comic ‘Deadly’, working with multinational comics companies and faithfully depicting Indigenous themes in his work.

We then had a conversation about Indigenous content (or lack thereof) in Australian comics. Never forgetting 'Condoman' of course.

We finish with a Jo Waite update; featuring exhibition curation, comics workshops and working with teens.

If you are an Indigenous Australian doing comics or know of any Indigenous Autralians doing comics around the traps then drop me a line. I'd love to explore this topic again in the future.

Enjoy.

Time for melbourne Cartoonists Studios/Workshop?

Come along to The Standard Hotel in Fitzroy. Talk ideas and dreams and let's see what we can come up with.

Date: Sunday, 29 November 2009

Time: 18:00 - 21:00

Location: The Standard Hotel - Fitzroy St, Fitzroy.

Description A few people have been tossing about an idea of having a space dedicated to comics in Melbourne. I've put my hand up to say - let's get this going.

The current vision as I see it is for a place where there are studios for10-12 working cartoonists to rent, a gallery space for exhibitions and launches, a space for workshops, talks and jams, a shared library of comics and books about comics, possibly a sales outlet for comics and art by the people involved.

So come along all ye cartoonists/comickers/graphic novelists/interested parties. But ask yourself seriously if you are willing to commit your time, your money and possibly your sanity to this venture. Think of it as a 2-5 year commitment - that's how i am.

I see it as a focussed community hub that supports and expands the stuff that already happens in Melb.

TheComicSpot June 09 - The Satirical Eye and Simon Barnard.

June 09 now added to the archive.

The June 09 edition of TheComicSpot features a great audio tour through an exhibition held at the NGV International called 'The Satirical Eye:comedy and critique from Hogarth to Daumier'.

Bernard Caleo is joined in the gallery by Dr Petra Kayser, Assistant Curator of Prints & Drawings who put together the exhibition and cartoonist Simon Barnard who is a keen student of Australian cartooning.

Back in the studio Bernard and Simon join me to discuss Simon's work with the Hobart Mercury and Australian Mad Magazine. We also (sort of) discuss the role of cartooning in Australia both past and present.

In reviews and news: the new anthology from Gestalt called 'Flinch' and some good news from J Marc Schmidt and Jason Franks.
